Dental emergencies are never welcome, but dealing with one when you’re at home isn’t all that difficult. You can just visit the dentist you’d normally see and get the care you need. However, if you’re currently in the United States for work and you need to see a dentist immediately, you’ll have to navigate the process of finding a dentist while managing the pain of a toothache.

Thankfully, there are plenty of dentists here who will be able to help you. Here’s how to find one, and how to get emergency care from them.

Finding an Emergency Dentist While Traveling

One of the things that intimidates people most about getting dental care in the US, especially if they’re coming from the UK or Canada, is wondering how they’re going to pay for it. First of all, that depends on whether you have travel insurance or not. If you do, your first move should be to call the travel insurance company and ask for a referral for an in-network dentist.

If you don’t have traveler’s insurance, you’re probably going to have to pay out of pocket (though it’s worth noting that many practicing have financing plans so you won’t have to pay all at once). In that case, you can find just google “dentist near me,” or ask someone at your hotel for a recommendation. The International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers is also a great resource for this kind of information.

Preparing Your Teeth For a Trip

While getting emergency care overseas isn’t impossible, it’s usually the sort of thing you’d like to avoid. The best thing to do is to be prepared so that you minimize your risk of running into that kind of problem.

First, it’s usually a good idea to get a checkup from your preferred dentist before you go. If you haven’t been to the dentist for a while, this is a great opportunity to make sure you aren’t dealing with any oral health problems.

You should also stock up on your dental hygiene tools. Get a travel dental kit if you haven’t already, and make sure to use it so that your oral health will be in good condition for the duration of your stay.
