What You Should Know About Fluoride: Uncovering 3 Myths

One thing that seems to be everywhere in dentistry is fluoride. From the treatments your dentist provides to the toothpaste you use, it seems like there’s plenty of it to go around! While it’s talked about a lot, there are actually several myths around it that can make you hesitant to use it for your smile. Here’s the truth behind three common misconceptions so you make a confident decision for your oral health.

Myth #1: Fluoride Causes Discoloration Over Time

Some believe that excess fluoride will cause stains over time. This thought isn’t entirely wrong, but it’s more nuanced than a simple black and white answer. What people may be worried about is dental fluorosis. This is when someone was overexposed to this mineral while they were younger, causing white spots in minor cases and light or dark brown areas in more severe ones.

However, this condition can only happen during the first eight years of your life! That means adults, teens, and even older children don’t need to worry as they are past the age threshold. Better yet, this condition is rare and only cosmetic. If you do have it, then you don’t need to worry about it affecting your teeth’s health or function.

Myth #2: Fluoride Is Unsafe

Going off the point above, you might assume that fluoride is unsafe to have while a smile is developing. While overexposure is a possibility, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing there are decades of research that help prevent it.

Nowadays, the levels of this mineral in toothpaste, local water supplies, and other products have been adjusted to be safe and avoid overexposure. Just use each thing as directed, and you don’t need to worry; that way, you can enjoy the many benefits it brings.

Myth #3: Fluoride Doesn’t Help Against Decay

Part of the research about fluoride shows how it can be great for your smile. It works by remineralizing your enamel as it delivers things to keep it strong. When it becomes reinforced, your teeth may be sturdier against acid attacks from the bacteria in your mouth. That way, you don’t need to worry about developing decay.

While you may think brushing and flossing without fluoride is enough, you still need this mineral. While you are cleaning off harmful plaque, you aren’t fortifying your enamel. Over time, it can be more vulnerable to cavities.

In the end, fluoride has many benefits for your oral health. Don’t believe myths online, but learn the facts so you feel confident using it for your grin.
